ARTIST STATEMENT

Abstract art compels me — it is how I recreate the feeling of encountering beauty in the seen and unseen world. I paint to express my experience through a visual language of color, shape, and space.

Layers are built, obscured, reconsidered, and transformed — much like life itself. Each painting is a continual evolution, inspired by fluctuating emotions, judgments, fears, mistakes, and breakthroughs. My creative process mirrors the human condition: we can choose to transmute challenging experiences and deep emotional scars into our greatest strengths, or not. My impetus to create is both a cathartic act and a longing — to witness layers of the past become something aesthetically evocative.

What ultimately surfaces in my work is the culmination of countless hidden moments of growth — each one underscoring the profound power we hold to choose our responses, to connect with the awareness that resides within us, and through conscious decision-making, evolve toward peace and compassion for ourselves and others.

ARTIST PROCESS

Jenny Courain is an abstract artist working primarily with acrylic paints, mediums, and a mix of traditional and inventive tools to create layered, colorful works on canvas.

Jenny builds her layers through a staining process, approaching the canvas with bold, gestural swaths of color in combination with delicate applications and subtle techniques. She repeatedly lifts color and blocks off large areas until shapes and spaces emerge and begin to establish a visual relationship with one another. As these arrangements grow more harmonious, she introduces a technique she calls decomposition – deliberately disrupting the organization and upsetting the balance to rebel against the order she has built. The resulting dissonance and visual chaos become an opportunity to restore equilibrium. As this cycle of decomposition repeats, she ultimately achieves the layers of luminous depth and richness that define her work.

ARTIST BIO

The Arts have been a haven in Jenny Courain’s life since early childhood. She earned a BFA from VCU Arts, one of the country’s top art schools, and spent over a decade creating art curriculum and teaching in public and private schools as well as founding two businesses dedicated to providing art enrichment opportunities for students pre-k to 8th grade.

Later, her passion expanded into the healing arts. In 2013, Jenny completed a 200-hour registered yoga teacher training alongside Reiki I and Mindfulness certifications. In addition to teaching at multiple yoga studios, she also served as an Ambassador for Project Yoga Richmond, bringing yoga to underserved communities. Using her art enrichment programs as a blueprint, Jenny founded another business offering yoga and mindfulness programs to elementary, middle and high school students.

In 2020, Jenny opened Park Studio in Richmond, Virginia’s historic Fan District — a personal art studio that doubled as an exhibition space for her work. When her two children left for college, she embraced the change as an opportunity to relocate and fully dedicate herself to the pursuit of her art career. Seeking a climate that suited her soul and fueled her creativity, she was drawn to the year-round tropical color and coastal inspirations found in Delray Beach, Florida — a charming village by the sea with a vibrant arts and yoga community. Today, her studio is nestled in the heart of the Pineapple Grove Arts District and is open by appointment.

Jenny’s work is held in private and corporate art collections. She is available through direct inquiry and commissioned projects. Subscribe to her newsletter to receive early access to new releases and the latest studio news.
